Overview

Who Must Apply for Employer Tax Registration with Revenue in Ireland

Employer Tax Registration with Revenue In Ireland is a legally required procedure for certain groups of enterepreneurs. Individuals must register as an employer in 2 cases:

  1. They pay their full-time employees in excess of €36 per month ( €8 per week).
  2. They pay €9 per month or €2 per week for people who have other employment.

Companies must register as employers and pay PAYE (pay as you earn) tax on the income of directors even if there are no employees hired. Directors of Irish-incorporated companies pay the PAYE tax on their income regardless of their residence status or where they perform their duties. The standard rate of PAYE tax in Ireland is 20% of your wages if your annual earning is less than €35,300. If you make anything over the limit, your PAYE tax size is 40%.

You must NOT apply for employer tax registration with Revenue in Ireland if you have one domestic employee to whom you pay less than €40 per week.

Why Register as an Employer in Ireland?

The motive to apply for employee tax registration with Revenue is pretty straightforward — this is what the Irish legislation requires. The Revenue Commissioners may issue a compulsory registration for those who do not register voluntarily. They will issue a formal notice of registration in this case.

How to Register as an Employer in Ireland

The majority of employers can manage their registrations online by following the online registration procedure through the Revenue On-Line Service (ROS). Non-residents should use the paper-based method and fill Form TR1 or TR2. Individuals who are already registered for Income tax or Corporation tax in Ireland need to fill out the form PREM Reg.

In order to incorporate a company a Form A1 shall be filled in and submitted together with a Constitution to the Registrar of Companies with scanned signed originals. Limited company is a separate entity from a legal person. Ltd companies are limited by shares. If business is liquidated, the company’s liabilities are treated separately to those of its shareholders and directors, in a way, protecting them from debt and financial losses of the business itself. Partnerships, on the other hand, have limited and unlimited partners who are treated as legal persons. Unlimited partners are responsible for all debt and liabilities accrued by the business.
