Sole trader or limited company for TikTok Shop?
A sole trader registration is the fastest way to start: you register with Revenue as self-employed and pay income tax on your profits through an annual tax return. See our sole trader registration service. If you trade under a name that is not your own, you also need a business name registration with the CRO.
A limited company suits sellers who expect higher turnover, want to protect personal assets or plan to work with brands and suppliers. TikTok asks a company for its CRO registration number and VAT number, and the company must have a registered office in Ireland. Before you choose a name for your shop or company, run our free company name check. For a detailed comparison, read sole trader or limited company.
VAT for TikTok Shop sellers in Ireland
- You must register for VAT once your turnover from selling goods exceeds the Revenue threshold of EUR 85,000 a year (EUR 42,500 for services).
- TikTok Shop asks companies for a VAT number when they open a seller account, so many companies register for VAT before they start selling.
- If you sell to buyers in other EU countries and your cross-border sales exceed EUR 10,000 a year, VAT is due in the buyer’s country. The One Stop Shop (OSS) lets you report this VAT through one Irish return.
- If you import stock from outside the EU, for example from China or the UK, you need an EORI number for customs.
We handle VAT registration in Ireland for sole traders and companies.
Bank account for your TikTok Shop
TikTok pays out your sales to an EU bank account, and the name on the account must match the seller: your own name for a sole trader, the company’s name for a company. We help companies with opening a business bank account.
Tax and accounting for TikTok Shop income
Income from TikTok Shop is taxable like any other business income. Keep records of every payout, TikTok commission and fee, refund, shipping cost and stock purchase.
- Sole traders report their profit on an annual income tax return (Form 11). See our Form 11 filing service.
- Companies pay corporation tax on profits, file a corporation tax return and an annual return with the CRO.
- VAT-registered sellers file VAT returns every two months.
Our accounting services cover bookkeeping, VAT returns and year-end accounts for online sellers.
Protect your brand on TikTok Shop
Popular products on TikTok are copied quickly. A registered trademark lets you report copycat listings and protects your shop name and logo. See our trademark registration service for Ireland and the EU.
